Petition statement:
“We are united in the fight to protect Harvard people and programs from painful, unnecessary cuts. Harvard schools should not make deep reductions to education and research programming—or to the committed staff who support and sustain those programs—when there is no concrete financial justification for the cuts. According to Harvard’s latest financial report, Harvard finances are very strong. And federal funding has just been restored. Harvard leaders who assert that their school’s financial situation is so dire that it warrants severe, painful cuts to staffing and programs must be accountable to their communities by providing detailed factual information about the specific, concrete financial problems the school is facing. Making severe cuts to jobs and programs, not out of urgent necessity but in reaction to fear and speculation about the future, will cause lasting harm to our staff and our University. As our University continues to contend with attacks from the federal government, we call on Harvard administrators to place the highest priority on preserving the livelihoods of the people—both union and non-union—who provide the essential infrastructure that enables faculty to teach, researchers to discover, and students to learn.”
